Training within the Trades

The Trades had to keep good order and maintain the standards of workmanship to a high level. Masters of the Trade were limited to 3 apprentices at any time, but had to both provide them with work but also look after their wellbeing too. These apprentices had to serve up to a 7 year term before being “time served”. At the end of this period, they could either seek work with a Master as a Journeyman, or else apply to the Trade to become a master themselves. The term Journeyman was used as an adaptation of the word “jourman”- meaning a man paid and employed by the day.
